4 out of 5 stars Nikon Camera Bag seems to have changed from earlier negative reviews   June 8, 2010

I recently ordered the Nikon Camera Bag under review and found some changes from some of the features that have received negative comments in previous reviews. The exterior fabric turns out to be identical to the exterior fabric on the soft case that came with my Nikon SB-600 flash, suggesting that the camera case does in fact come from Nikon. There are only two snaps on the side of the case, with none at the ends, although a number of reviewers complained about having to snap four clips in order to close the case. The shoulder strap has a pad on it, although it is not the world's most comfortable pad and tends to slip a bit on the shoulder. I replaced it with a FA-031 Post Office Shoulder Pad from Domke. The arrangement on the inside works, although it is somewhat limited. It holds my Nikon D-200, surprisingly with the MB-D200 grip and battery pack attached and with the Nikon 55-200 mm kit lens attached. With that configuration, there is room for my SB-600 flash and my Nikon 18-55 mm kit lens in the two vertical pockets at the opposite end of the case from the camera cradle end. I can use a double end cap to put my Nikon 35mm 1.8 prime lens on the end of the 18-55 mm kit lens, which allows me to carry everything except my Nikon 50 mm 1.8. If I put the latter in a soft bag, there is room to squeeze it in beside the lens mounted on the camera, but then things are becoming too crowded to conveniently work with changing lens around. If I want to carry the camera with the 35 mm mounted, which is the lens I generally use at present, then I have to choose between carrying one of the zoom lens or the flash. There is a pocket on the bottom floor of the case with a lid that lifts up that works for the storage of my remote release, etc. This pocket is just in front of the area designed to receive the grip/battery pack when attached. The case has two small pockets, one on each end, large enough to hold some batteries but not much else. The side pocket is long with space for three batteries of the type that power the camera, but too narrow and shallow to conveniently hold the flash. There is a handle on the top of the case that is adequate. I have not used the case long enough to determine how well it holds up, but the top flap seems stiff enough to maintain a seal around the side and ends when the camera case is carried by the handle. There is a pocket on the inside of the lid that serves well to hold lens cleaning tools, and a thin pocket on the rear that would hold some printed matereial on one sort or another. What is interesting is that the case is designed to accomodate the battery pack/grip, but forces one to choose between a flash and a zNikon Digital & Film SLR System Case Gadget Bag for D3, D3x, D700, D300, D200, D90, D80, D60, D5000, D40x, D40, D3000 & D300s Camerasoom lens if there is a need to carry the set with the 35 mm prime lens mounted.

4 out of 5 stars Very good for a basic, starter setup   May 23, 2010

I have a D40X with the 18-55 lens and the 55-200 lens, extra battery, battery charger, Hoya lens wallet with 4 lenses in it, sb-400 flash, all the manuals, lens pen, and the 55-200 lens hood all in this bag, and I have nothing in one of the end pockets, and there is still some room for some smaller accessories, like maybe a 35mm AF lens or some other stuff. I really like the bag, it appears to be very durable in construction and has a sufficient amount of padding. The only thing I wish that this bag came with is some sort of configuration map on the different ways the removable panels could be configured. What I ended up doing was laying everything that I had out and making various attempts at configuring an acceptable to me setup. A couple of the panels have a corner square out of them, and I wasn't sure how I wanted to use them so that took some time and thought. Other than that, the I am well satisfied with the bag. The lid is attached on the back side, in effect making it hinged if you will and closes with to snap buckles. The front and sides of the lid have formed edges that turn down so that when the bag is closed, it in effect is a cap to the bag. The handle feels nice in the hand and the long strap has a movable cushion that appears to be adequate for the possible weight that could be carried. I will agree with some of the other reviews that if you have something similar to what I listed above and add a longer lens such as a 70-300 or something, you might not have enough room to carry it all. Most definately would require reconfiguring the internals of the bag. Let me put it this way, if you like organizational puzzles, this is a good one to optimize space.

Summary-If you have a "starter" kit, this bag is great. If your a professional who likes to carry alot of lenses, especially long ones, this might not be the bag for you. I like the bag and think that with reasonable care, it will last and be functional for a long time.

I have a D60 with one extra zoom lens and some filters, battery charger, and some cleaning stuff and this bag is PERFECT. I love the thick padding. And it was so inexpensive!

Bobbie D. Johnson (VALDOSTA, GEORGIA, US)
This was the case I had been looking for and it fit the bill in all areas, The price was well worth it and it came thru ups in just a day or so with no damage or anything. It holds my camera and all my camera gadgets very well plus some extra room. Remove everything and ya have a very nice overnite bag. I would rate it 10 stars, so thank you for a great product and service.
