Product Description
WD Advanced Format technology increases media format efficiency, thus enabling larger drive capacities. WD Advanced Format drives are specifically optimized for Mac and the latest Windows operating systems such as Windows Vista and Windows 7. WD Advanced Format drives work with legacy operating systems such as Windows XP but require the use of the free WD Align software available on www.wdc.com/advformat. Available in capacities up to 2 TB, WD Caviar® GreenTM SATA hard drives reduce power consumption by up to 40% and offer best-in-class acoustics and operating temperature. Based on WD's exclusive GreenPowerTM technology, these drives are designed to deliver power savings as the primary attribute. As hard drive capacities increase, the power required to run those drives increases as well. WD Caviar Green drives make it possible for energy-conscious customers to build systems with higher capacities and the right balance of system performance, ensured reliability, and energy conservation. They are ideal for PCs, external storage and other devices that require lower power consumption and cool, quiet operation.

1 out of 5 stars It is windows-only hardware   September 6, 2010

If you plan to use this on a Mac, Unix/Linux or a NAS, forget it. WD does not support non-windows platforms.

Search the web for "wdidle" and be shocked; the core feature of the "green" functionality is parking the heads when the HD is idle. But the timer is so small that on most operating systems you will get like 100s of load/unload cycles in an hour, expiring the projected lifetime of the product in a matter of months. The only known workaround is to run such "wdidle" program in a DOS environment to disable this functionality - could we still call it "green" after that?

If you have a desktop computer that can both plug the drive into and run this DOS utility, it might be worth buying this drive. Otherwise forget it. I'm definitely not buying another from WD, and I'll probably return this product if I'm unable to find a PC to perform such procedure.

5 out of 5 stars 2TB advanced drive   September 5, 2010

Advanced format mainly means that it will write to 4k sectors, while the default has usually been 512byte sectors. This is only a concern to those using Windows xp or older, and when using a cloning app to copy a harddrive. The transition has been 10 years in the making and gives performance enhancements in better format efficiency, better ECC burst error correction, better overall error rate capability, and not to mention that all drives over 2TB and by 2011 will use 4k sectors. More info at WD website and for more technical info, at Anandtech website.

About the harddrive I recieved, Amazon, you need to do a better job of packaging. Recieved mine right when they got they're 2tb stock replenished. The drive was in an anti-static bag with the eggcarton type holders suspending it in a WD labled plain box. This box was then placed inside a larger amazon box with no airbubbles or stuffing, allowing the WD box to slide about 4 inches top and bottom. Did a full format and drive error check to make sure everything was ok in Win7. Already have it half full with backup data and running good for 3 days straight now.

3 out of 5 stars Not Plug n Play   September 2, 2010

This little drive packs a big wallop... once it's been initialized. Oddly enough, my drive arrived uninitialized, so I needed to download WD's acronis true image program to format the drive correctly. Windows 7 64-bit inherently was unable to format the drive correctly; plugging in the hard drive would not prompt for format, nor would a drive letter appear in windows explorer. The only ways I knew that the drive was even recognized was because

1) I could hear the drive spinning
2) Under device manager, the disk drive was recognized

Disk speed is on the slow side, especially for bunches of smaller files.

Overall, this drive is functional and an incredible value; however, took a little while longer to setup than I expected it to.

3 out of 5 stars 4 months later still waiting for rebate   August 27, 2010
Missapple (Tri-Cities, WA)
I ordered this drive with a $15 rebate. It was easy to install into my MacPro desktop as a 4th hard drive. I am booting from it although I could boot from any of my hard drives. I wanted to install some fresh software without getting it mixed up with older versions on my other hard drives, so I used this drive and made it my normal boot drive. The only thing I have noticed in the 4 months I have had this drive is that when I wake from sleep, it takes longer to get anything to happen. I keep several applications open all the time--email, web browser, InDesign, and a few others. Previous hard drives, I would wake from sleep on the Mac, then just click on one of the programs to activate it and get to work. With this drive, it takes maybe 30 seconds or a minute before I can actually do anything after my Mac has been in Sleep mode. Once it is awake, it seems about normal though. Maybe that is the price I pay for getting an energy efficient hard drive.

The one thing that has me most annoyed is that I sent in the rebate info and the company that sends out the rebates has all my info and is waiting to get the go-ahead from ZipZoomFly to mail it to me. I think 4 months is plenty long enough. I am starting to think they don't intend to send it at all.

1 out of 5 stars Bad sectors   August 27, 2010
M. Bartlett (Costa Rica.)
i love WD drives, but i am not pleased with this one or series, i guess i got a bad one, 1 week of usage and suddenly the drive drops to RAW format, i was able to get my data back off it using some tools, but after scanning it was filled with bad sectors!

Frustrating that this day in age hard drives seem to become less and less reliable then they were 10 years ago.
