| Customer Reviews: You can do much better for much less March 4, 2010 Sterilecuckoo58 (Massachusetts) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I purchased one of these Memory masters from a big box store during the holiday season for $99, and it was DOA.... not peep from it... so back it went. I purchased another one and checked it in the store, and at least the radio worked. Finally set it up with the PC and amplifier and attempted to use it. The phonograph function of this unit is decidedly chintzy, but for $100, what did I really expect. In this particular instance the sound was horrid, likely a misaligned stylus/cartridge... In my research afterwards I was clued into the ART USB Phono Plus V2 RIAA Phono Preamp for $70 to $99 (comes with Audacity among others) and lesser transducers for about $30. Resurrect one of your old good turntables, or get one from CL / Ebay and you'll have a much better set up. Your archived recordings will only be as good as the weakest link in your audio system. Technics turntables are out there, there's service providers who'll fix 'em. All told, I am going to be out about $250 between the repairs (cleaning, cartridge, belt) and the ART Preamp. That's more than I paid for the Crosley Archiver, but less than the advertised prices I am seeing here. This approach also keeps good electronics out of the landfill, leaves junk on the store shelf, and puts local professionals to work.
New life for my music library November 25, 2009 generic_odowd (Illinois) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
The Crosley CR2401 A is as advertised, though using some features and software with USB is not too easy.
FM radio reception is poorer than my boom box with rabbit ears.
The cabinet itself is very nice.
Sound is very good, and creating a CD with a single track is easy. I'm not good at putting the track breaks in the right place.
The free Audacity software is good also, and the instructions Crosley provides are good. It's a slow and painful learning curve. I've gotten to the point where the Audacity sound is great, but haven't been able to write it to a CD.
I would definitely recommend a Crosley 5 in 1 turnable. If I can figure out how to write the edited audio to a CD, it will be perfect with the USB.
Great Instrument to preserve music October 5, 2009 Larry Reidy 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
I have recorded several LPs & cassettes To CD & computer. Even non stereo (some of my LPs are More than 50 years old) sound great on IPod & Home entertainment center. Great service & price from Amazon. Don't bother with special shipping. I received my Crosley in two days & I specified free shipping.
