Teac Turntable USB Recorder CD Player Radio - Teac LP-U200

Customer Reviews:
3 out of 5 stars Good unit, with some limitations   June 3, 2009

Principally, I needed a good turntable, so I could transfer my old LPs to my computer for digitalization. I figured another CD player would also be useful. I wanted something reasonably priced, but after looking at various products that combine turntable, CD and cassette players in one unit, I thought they all looked pretty shoddy. On the other hand, TEAC has had a good reputation for decades, and though this model appears to have been introduced some years ago, I decided to give it a try. I ordered one from Amazon, and in general I am very pleased. However, I should mention some limitations. The radio is good, and so is the (single-disc) CD player. The built-in speakers are fine but do not provide the volume you want in a large space. Though the unit is called a recorder, it does not record on its own. For that, you must use either a USB connection or an SD memory card. Warning: it is built for USB 1.0, and from what I've read will not work with USB 2.0 or 3.0, though I haven't tried those myself. I didn't even bother trying an SD memory card. And now for something curious: I had intended to hook up the TEAC to my larger sound system, but I was dismayed to find that, though the TEAC has input jacks, it has no output jacks. That led me to think I would be stuck with its relatively small speakers. I was almost ready to return the thing when I hit on a gimmick. The instructions don't tell you this, but if you attach a line from its earphone jack to the input jacks on a larger system--using a simple connection you can get from Radio Shack--you have the equivalent of output jacks. To make a long story short, I use the TEAC almost exclusively with this connection, which leads from the TEAC through my sound system to my computer. This way, I can easily create MP3 and WAV files on my PC, and can create CDs from these files using computer software. With the above restrictions, I can recommend this unit.

1 out of 5 stars Not a CD RECORDER and the Radio is worse than a clock radio   March 6, 2009

2 out of 5 stars Outdated Technology   January 6, 2009

Works fine overall, but beware: if you are trying to record to USB, it is ONLY compatible with USB ver. 1.1 - USB 2.0 became the standard in 2001! If you try to record to a USB 2.0 drive or a newer SD card, the entire machine will freeze up within seconds.

There is no reason for this new product to be packaged with this outdated technology - at the least they should make it apparent on the packaging.

4 out of 5 stars TEAC LP-U200   December 26, 2008

I received the TEAC LP-U200 a couple of weeks ago. I like the product overall, but trying to create a file for each song on the record is a little tedious. I tried setting the machine to the MANUAL mode in order to press the TRACK INCREMENT after each song so that it would create a separate file for each song as specified by the instructions. After the first song played and was recorded on a flash drive, I pushed the TRACK INCREMENT button and I noticed that the digital counter display indicated that the recording had stopped. The display continued to show the same digital count and the next record started before the counter changed to indicate 0.00 and then it would start counting again, but you would miss the next couple of notes at the beginning of the next song. To correct this problem, after the first song ends, you press the TRACK INCREMENT button and hit the RECORD button, then lift the needle from the record and wait until the digital counter displays 0.00, then lower the needle to the record and press the RECORD button immediately. You must do this after each song is played in order to separate them. The only other way to record an old album, if you don't want to create a file for each song is to play the record and press RECORD. If you want to record a CD with different songs from different albums, then you must record each song as a different file - of course the file name would be the name of the song. Everything else worked as stated, but I haven't yet tried recording cassette tapes.

5 out of 5 stars Same as LP-R400 but with SD/USB instead of CD recorder   October 10, 2008

This is the same unit as the Teac LP-R400 but instead or recording directly to CD it records to USB or SD card. I find this to be much more useful than recording to CD because now I can record for hours at the time and bring it with me to the Gym or listen at work. It can record to MP3 at 96, 128 or 160 Bits but not to WMA as stated above. No big loss as I do not like WMA format but Amazon should correct their description of this unit. The sound is better than I had expected and perhaps the best sounding unit in this category. Recording is very easy but automatic tract split does not work all that well so you are better off doing it yourself manually. Overall a very nice product.
